What is a bookmarklet?

A bookmarklet is a bookmark that stores a small piece of JavaScript instead of a regular address. When you click it, the code runs on the page you have open: it shows some information, marks things on the page or opens a Google tool with the page’s URL. No extension, account or download needed.

Is it safe?

We read the code of every tool on this page line by line. None of them collects data or sends anything to another server. The ones that open Google tools only pass the current page’s URL to that tool. To see exactly what you run, use “Copy code” and inspect it.

Limitations

  • Some sites block bookmarklets with their security settings (Content Security Policy); the tools will not run there.
  • Tool output is in English.
  • Phone browsers have no bookmarks bar, so the tools are built for desktop. They work in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Firefox.
  • Very long scripts may not fit in a bookmark in some browsers; if so, copy the code and paste it into the developer console.

The 33 bookmarklets on this page come from Nima Jafari’s open-source Google.Chrome.Bookmarklets project (MIT license). We made two small fixes: the canonical tool now reads the canonical link correctly, and the <br> tool no longer freezes the browser on some pages. Four performance tools based on capo.js and Webperf-Snippets fall under their own licenses, so we left them out. Thanks for the work.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about SEO bookmarklets.

What is the difference between a bookmarklet and a browser extension?

An extension is installed in the browser, can run in the background on every page and asks for broad permissions. A bookmarklet runs only when you click it, only on that page, and asks for no permissions.

I click it on a site and nothing happens. Why?

The site most likely blocks outside code with a Content Security Policy. In that case, copy the code and run it in the browser’s developer console (F12).

Can I use them on my phone?

Mobile browsers have no bookmarks bar, so it is not practical. The tools are built for desktop browsers.

Do the tools collect my data or data from the sites I visit?

No. The code runs only on the open page and sends nothing to any server. The ones that open Google tools pass only the page URL to that tool.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up. The code is MIT-licensed; you can use and change it as you like.
