What do meta tags do?

Meta tags are short pieces of code in a page’s <head> that visitors never see. Google usually takes the title and description it shows in search results from them. When a link is shared on WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook or X, the card’s title, description and image come from these tags too. If they are missing, the platform picks random text and images from the page, and the result often looks poor and gets few clicks.

Which tags does this tool create?

  • Title and description: the headline and snippet shown in search results. The site name is added to the title with the separator you choose.
  • Canonical: declares the page’s main URL so the same content is not indexed under several addresses.
  • Robots: tells search engines whether to index the page and whether large image previews are allowed.
  • Open Graph: the share tags used by Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and most messaging apps (og:title, og:description, og:image…).
  • Twitter Card: the card type, account, title and image for shares on X.
  • Article tags: published and modified dates, author, section and tags for blog posts.

How to use it

  • Fill in the form. The notes on the right show whether the title will be cut, how long the description is and whether the image is suitable.
  • Switch between the Google and share previews to check both.
  • Copy the code into your page’s <head>. On WordPress with an SEO plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math, enter the same details in the plugin’s fields instead; do not add the tags twice.
  • After publishing, confirm the card with the Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector.

Limitations

Google does not always show your title and description as written; it may pick other text from the page for a given query. Pixel width is an estimate and the previews are representative: each platform renders cards in its own design. The tool does not open your page or read existing tags; it is for writing new ones.

The tag set and order, including how the title is joined with the site name, the Open Graph and Twitter Card tags, image type and article tags, are adapted to browser JavaScript from Mohammad Javad Ebrahimi’s open-source SeoTags project (MIT license). Thanks for the work.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about meta tags.

Do I need the meta keywords tag?

No. Google announced in 2009 that it does not use the keywords tag for ranking. That is why this tool does not create it; spend the effort on the title and description.

Why is og:title different from the title?

The title is for search results and usually includes the site name. Share cards show the site name separately, so og:title uses only the page title and the name does not appear twice on the card.

What size should the share image be?

1200×630 px (1.91:1) is the safest size. The image must be at a full URL starting with https. X and some apps may crop the image from the centre; keep important text and logos in the middle.

Shares still show an old image or title. What should I do?

Platforms cache cards. Re-scrape the URL in the Facebook Sharing Debugger and enter it in LinkedIn’s Post Inspector. The card refreshes within a few minutes.

Is it free, and is my data stored?

It is free and needs no sign-up. The tool runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to our server.
